Celebrating Tamil Martial Art Form
Feathers Academy has taken up this mission of preserving “Traditional Martial Art Form” of Tamil Nadu “ Silambam”. In Feathers Academy Silambam classes are taken for all. Silambam emerged in Tamil Nadu and is a weapon based martial art form. The word “Silam” stands for mountain and “bam” for bamboo, thus the weapon bamboo stick. It is closely associated with Kalaripayattu.
The key purpose of learning Silambam is enabling the defender to oppose armed opposition with a simple weapon: a stick. Foot movements are very important in Silambam. There are 16 foot movements which help to keep the pace with the movement of the stick.
It is believed to have originated in 1000 BC and predominantly used in warfare by most rulers in Tamil Nadu.
